“Normally we have, is it 20% oxygen in the air, whereas at a higher altitude it could fall as low as about 10%, 5%. So the oxygenation to the baby is compromised and when a baby is compromised the natural response to a uterus is to go into labour and have that baby out. That’s one of the physiological reasons, also the pressures vary and that may affect the fine balance between the uterine pressure that’s holding everything together and chances of (the) placenta being detached and bleeding is higher.”

“Any areas that are high risk with infections, or sanitation, or whatever of those where the woman is likely to acquire infections of all sorts, even other diseases. Our advice would be to be safe. To try and avoid infested areas, to book into places where there’s adequate sanitation, clean air and hygiene, washing your hands, basic fundamentals and if you have to take drugs make sure you read all the literature about the drugs, avoid taking drugs over the counter in countries you don’t know, where the literature you might not be able to read, always seek advice of a professional, health care professional and even, if I can go backwards, when you’re booking your travel. Make sure your travel insurance covers those areas.”
